Choose electric or water-based
Electric cable or heating-mat systems can be simpler for small rooms and renovations. Water-based pipe systems are more involved to install but may be more economical for whole houses, depending on the heat source and building.
Insulate below the system
Suitable rigid insulation limits heat loss into the slab, a reflective layer may form part of some specified build-ups, and a correctly designed screed distributes heat and protects the pipe or cable. Follow the full manufacturer and designer specification rather than combining products casually.
Plan an even layout
Heat-loss calculations should determine the layout. Typical spacing runs 10–20 cm, but the actual spacing and loop length must be designed for each room. Avoid overlaps and allow for perimeter movement.
Pressure-test water pipework before the screed is poured, record the result and photograph every route while it is still visible.
Select a compatible floor
Tile and natural stone conduct heat well. Laminate and vinyl can work when explicitly rated for underfloor heating. Thick carpet and solid timber may insulate too strongly or move with heat, so confirm the floor manufacturer’s limits before installation.
Control each useful zone
Programmable or smart thermostats can schedule rooms separately and avoid overheating. A typical floor-surface range is 24–29°C, but the safe limit depends on the room, floor finish and applicable standard.
Let the screed cure
A new screed commonly needs around 21–30 days before heating begins, depending on its type and thickness. Follow the screed specification and commission the system gradually; starting too early can crack the floor build-up.
Use experienced installers
Correct loop or cable placement, pressure testing, screed coordination, sensors and controls all matter. An error below a finished floor is expensive to reach, so specialist design and installation are worthwhile.
