Leaks
For a dripping tap, a worn washer or cartridge may be the cause. Under a sink, a loose joint or failed seal is common. A continuously running toilet can point to the float or fill valve. Isolate the water first if the leak is active, and call promptly if it is concealed or near electrics.
Blocked sinks, baths and showers
Soap, hair and grease commonly slow a drain. A plunger or mechanical snake may help a simple local blockage; strainers and keeping fats out of the sink reduce repeats. Hot water, bicarbonate and vinegar can help mild build-up, but avoid mixing cleaners and do not use aggressive chemicals where they could damage pipework or endanger the next person opening it.
Low water pressure
Clean limescale from tap aerators and shower heads and check for visible leaks or a local obstruction. If every outlet is affected, ask the water supplier whether the network is under maintenance before assuming the building pipework has failed.
Drain odours
Organic deposits, an empty or faulty trap, a poor seal or a drainage defect can let odours into a room. Clean accessible traps safely and make sure they retain water; a persistent smell needs proper investigation.
Blocked toilets
Use a suitable toilet plunger first. A toilet snake can address some local obstructions, but stop if the fixture may be damaged or water is rising. Never flush wet wipes, sanitary products or large quantities of paper.
Discoloured water
Brown water or particles may come from old corroding pipes or temporary network work. Run the cold tap briefly and check supplier notices. If the problem persists, the internal pipework or supply needs professional assessment.
Noisy pipes
Banging when a valve closes can indicate water hammer; whistling may relate to pressure or a restricted valve. Make sure exposed pipes are supported. A water-hammer arrestor or pressure correction may be needed after diagnosis.
Hot water faults
Check the user settings and displayed error code, but do not open the boiler or water heater. Limescale, a heat-exchanger fault or another appliance issue needs an appropriately qualified technician.
